Love that the runs on pure electric power, but doubt its authority in the snow? You're not alone. To find out for sure whether or not the LEAF plays as nice in snowy, icy climates as it does on the environment, a collective of auto journalists tested its capabilities on a slick, powder-covered test course in Shibetsu, Hokkaido, Japan.
Superior Nissan of Conway is proud to report the Nissan LEAF EV was like a Snow Hare in Alaska. Even at 230 meters above sea level, in ice, snow and temps below 16-degrees Fahrenheit; it seemed perfectly in its element -in terms of both performance and handling. This is thanks largely to the EV's Vehicle Dynamic Control and thoughtful weight distribution no doubt.
Speaking on the deft performance the Nissan LEAF demonstrated in the testing, Yasuo Kusakabe, Chairman, Automobile Journalists Association of Japan says, "I feel the [Nissan] LEAF has been developed well, and incorporating the merits of the EV have made the car's characteristics more generous to drivers."1 As an example, Kusakabe points to the unique response the LEAF gives drivers when they step on the accelerator pedal: distinctive gentleness.
However, performance and handling weren't the only things the 60-some-odd auto journalists hosting the tests set out to judge. They also had a keen eye on battery temperature. Could the LEAF li-ion pack maintain optimal levels of warmth in below-freezing conditions? Maintaining an average battery temperature of between 41 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it proved: yes, it most certainly can.
